Chapter 2
I did my best to shut out the pain, but it was impossible. When I closed my eyes to try and ignore what Jharak was doing to me, he forced them open using some sort of clamps to keep them open, which only added to my pain.
This torture wasn't much different than what I suffered at Makari's hands three years ago, except that Jharak enjoyed what he did. My screams brightened the gleam in his eyes. When I tried to deny him that pleasure he only made it worse for me. When my voice gave out, he put his ear next to my mouth just to hear the soft sounds and gurgles that escaped in my pain-filled stupor.
I didn't care at this point though. I didn't bother trying to hide my suffering anymore. I just wanted it to stop one way or another. Finally, I no longer had to watch Jharak as he methodically tore strips of my flesh and held them over my face, so I could see his work as he explained what he was doing and how he enjoyed watching the life slowly drain from my eyes. My vision had blurred. Even the light in the room seemed to dim, and I wondered for a moment if I was dying.
Something warm brushed my cheek gently and soft words were a whisper in my ear. The voice seemed familiar, but I couldn't place it at first. Then I realized it was Makari. I tried to say his name, but it came out sounding more like a croak.
"Don't try to speak," Makari said.
He wiped my face with a damp cloth, and I realized for the first time that my eyes were closed. I forced them open. Though my vision was still blurred, I could almost make out Makari's tormented expression as he cleaned me.
"Jharak left for the night. He allowed me to clean you up, but he won't let me use Danam on your wounds."
Of course, by this point, I was sure Drevin wouldn't care if I survived so there was no point in using it on me.
Makari continued speaking to me in soothing tones, but his words were beginning to sound muffled. My eyes closed involuntarily, and the world drifted away.
